Top 10 Places To Go In Southern California

This is a tough one to call with nearly 1000 trips listed but here are the  top places to go in Southern California from Daytippen.com. Not included are the obvious amusement parks, even though they are great places to visit.  If you would like to add your favorite place to visit the comment section is open.

Number 10:
Great Balloon Ride Irvine California.  Soar up to 400 feet over the Irvine Valley on a free balloon ride. Billed as one of the first attractions to the Great Park. Standing 118 feet tall, the Balloon can hold up to 30 passengers in its gondola. The balloon  is always tethered to the ground by a steel cable, and even if broke away the pilot it trained to land safely.

Number 9:
Catalina Island Just about any traveler can find something to do on the island. If you can stay a few days, it’s a good idea to start with a scenic city tour to get a feel for what’s to offer. Stroll along the palm lined streets and shop for unique island gifts.   Island boat shuttles are the most popular way to reach the Island.

Number 8:
Laguna Beach. Part sleepy beach town and part thriving art colony, Laguna Beach has a little of everything for those that want a relaxing getaway and some fun in the California sun. Main Beach is the largest and most popular stretch of beach in Laguna. It is located in the middle of the town where Broadway and Ocean Avenues intersect Coast Highway. There is a boardwalk that runs the length of the beach so it is a nice place to take a walk or people watch.

Number 7:
La Jolla. Known as much for its magnificent bluffs as the multi-million dollar homes that line them, La Jolla is a beautiful coastal community just a short drive from the excitement of downtown San Diego. It’s soft sandy beaches are ripe with activity, which means you’ll likely be able to find some way to enjoy your favorite water sports – be it surfing, snorkeling, kayaking or even kite boarding.

Number 6:
Palm Springs Tram. Once onboard the tram the fun begins. The tram climbs 8,563 feet in about 15 minutes rotating 360 degrees several times during the accent. Each time the tram passes over one of the towers there is a slight drop which usually gets a few screams form your fellow riders. Don’t worry the tram has a perfect safety record and has never lost any riders.

Butte Lake Campground

Within walking distance of majestic Butte Lake, and perched at an elevation of nearly 6,100 feet in the northeastern section of Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California, Butte Lake campground provides visitors with the perfect blend of seclusion and civilization, amidst mountain hemlock, Jeffrey pine, Douglas fir, ponderosa pine and numerous other tree species.

Just under two hours from nearby Redding, and 45 minutes from the main park road, the 215-acre lake itself is a popular destination widely used for fishing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming.

Known worldwide for its volcanic history, the entire park floor is situated on soft volcanic soils, but perhaps the most unusual thing about Butte Lake is its underwater lava field, which has formed an unusual shoreline, creating an interesting area for hand-propelled watercraft to explore.

The various cracks and crevices that are found in and around the area are home to a diverse population of plants and animals, while the over 300 active geothermal mud pots and steam vents, provide an interesting look into the violent past of one of the most active volcanic regions in the southern Cascades. The main attraction being Lassen Peak, one of only two volcanoes in the continental United States to erupt during the 20th century.

Despite its menacing past , Lassen Peak remains one of the most accessible volcanoes in the Cascades, and thousands of mountaineers each year make the trek to its nearly 11,000-foot summit. No technical climbing is required to reach the top, but even the modest hiking buff can find numerous trails in the surrounding region that provides a host of opportunities to view the mountain from a variety of perspectives.

This fairly primitive facility is more remote than other campgrounds within the park, and campers must travel on a six-mile gravel road south of highway 44 to access the facility, which

There are 101 individual campsites available on a first come, first served basis, each having its own fire pit and picnic table.

From the campground many of the areas other attractions can be easily accessed, as hikers and backpackers will find the trailhead for the Cinder Cone Trail, one of the most popular trails in the park that ascends a nearby volcanic dome.

Visitors can also explore Subway Cave–an underground lava tube–in the adjacent Lassen National Forest from late April through November, as well as the Painted Dunes, Snag Lake and Bathtub Lake.

To reserve a spot at Butte Lake Campground, please visit their website, or call (530) 335-7029 to speak with the campground host.

From Redding, California drive 63 miles east on State Highway 44 to Old Station. From the intersection of 44 and State Highway 89, continue east on 44 for 11 miles. Watch for sign to Butte Lake Campground. Turn right and continue for six miles on a rough gravel road.
