Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park
Knott's Berry Farm began as a roadside stand along Highway 39. The farm sold berries, berry plants and pies to support the farm. Knott's wife Cordelia sold chicken dinners to passing motorists. Within a few years the chicken dinners became so popular there were lines waiting to eat her famous chicken dinner. Walter Knott added attractions to entertain people while they waited for their chicken dinners. He built a ghost town using buildings relocated from real old west towns. Then a narrow-gauge train ride, a pan-for-gold area, and the Calico Mine Ride. In 1968, the Knott family fenced in the farm and charged admission for the first time. The family continued to add rides and attractions up until 1997, when the Knott family sold the amusement park operations to Cedar Fair. Since the take over, Knott's is now dominated by roller coasters, and much of the original charm has been lost. You can still find some of the old berry farm attractions at Knott's. The ghost town section is still there and the chicken dinners are still delicious. For kids Camp Snoopy is a real favorite and the young adults enjoy all the high tech rides. Older folks are going to be a little sad to see the farm these days.
