Temecula Wine Country is your best bet for Southern California wine tasting. There are about 30 wineries in the Temecula Valley with most of them concentrated on Rancho California Road and De Portola Road. To get to the wine county you will have to travel through several miles of housing tracts and shopping malls. As you drive up Rancho California Road you will wonder where are the wineries. Luckily for us they are still there and when you break through suburbia you will be surprised by how nice Temecula wine country is. It seems like there is a winery on every corner along the road and it can be a bit confusing as to which winery to visit. Depending on the time of year you visit the scenery can be lush green vineyards or off season barren hills. Most of the wineries have tasting rooms some are simple while others are elaborate with restaurants, gift shops and boutique hotels. With so many wineries concentrated in the valley there is no way to visit them all in one day. In all there are about 1300 acres of commercial vineyards, more than enough to produce numerous award winning Temecula wines. A trip to the Temecula valley for wine tasting is perfect way to spend a romantic day in Southern California. Several local vendors offer guided wine country tours and for first time visitors this might be your best option.

Old Town Temecula is a good choice to start out your trip to Southern California wine country. Several blocks of downtown Temecular are lined with antique dealers, unique stores, and restaurants. Old town has a western theme with many of the buildings looking like they were built in the 1800s. If you visit on a Saturday there is a popular Farmer's Market which offers fresh produce, flowers, and crafts. While in Old Town Temecula can pick up a wine country map for a self guided tour or sign up for a guided tour. If your looking for some adventure California Dreamin' offers morning hot air balloon rides over the Temecular Valley. For a more down to road tour head up Rancho California Road then turn right onto De Portola Road and follow it back down to highway 79. This route will take you past most of the wineries and return you back to I-15. Plan on spending at least two to three hours or longer depending on how many stops you make. Temecula wine country may ot be as scenic as central and northern california wine growing areas but you can make the trip in a day. If you do decide to visit Temecula wine country drive with care and consider having a non wine tasting driver along for the trip.
