Lake Cachuma is a beautiful lake located in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County. It was artificially created as part of the Bradbury Dam in 1953 by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, covering over 3,100 acres. The lake is conveniently located just a short drive from Santa Barbara, making it an ideal destination for those visiting the area for wine tasting or a family camping trip. Plenty of fun activities include children’s playgrounds for the little ones and a nature center that the whole family will love.
Cachuma Lake Nature Center
The Nature Center at Cachuma Lake is committed to promoting public understanding of the area and is located in a charming old ranch house. The center is run by a team of volunteers who offer exhibits on the local valley and mountain environment suitable for all ages. Most displays are interactive and provide hands-on opportunities for children to learn about various topics such as the construction of Bradbury Dam, the Chumash people’s history and presence, local birds, fish, and mammals, trees and habitats, and the region’s geology. The center also accommodates field trips for larger school groups, and admission is free.
Lake Cachuma Eagle & Wildlife Cruises
The Lake Cachuma Park naturalists provide a two-hour Eagle & Wildlife Cruise on a 30-passenger pontoon. This tour is the most comfortable way to observe and witness the flourishing habitat of various wildlife, birds, fish, trees, and plants. During the winter season, which lasts until November, you can see migratory Bald Eagles and waterfowl. The spring and summer are all about wildflowers and resident birds constructing nests.
Nature walks
Nature enthusiasts can enjoy a year-round, free 1/2-mile walk through the Oak Canyon Trail led by naturalists. The group meets at the Nature Center every Saturday from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
Fishing Lake Cachuma
Due to its topography, Cachuma is known as one of the best fishing lakes in Southern California. During average years, it can support large populations of bass, crappie, bluegill, red-ear sunfish, channel catfish, and rainbow trout. The lake is home to trout between 12 and 21 inches, with a record of 12.5 pounds. The lake hosts fishing derbies that are famous among fishing enthusiasts every year.
The Nature Center Trout Derby is a yearly event that raises funds for day-to-day operations. It is open to both children and adults and offers cash prizes to the winners. Many merchants provide sponsorship and support to make the event a success.
Camping Lake Cachuma
More than 550 campsites are available for campers, 90 of which offer full electrical, water, and sewer hookups for recreational vehicles. This location is perfect for those who want to escape the city without sacrificing its creature comforts.
Each campsite has a picnic table and a BBQ pit, making cooking a great meal easy. Showers and restrooms are located nearby. If you plan to stay for an extended period, a general store, gas station, and coin laundry are available onsite to cater to your needs.
Lake Cachuma Yurt Camping
