Before the harbor construction began in the late 1960s, the area was a favorite surfing destination called the Killer Dana. During certain times of the year, huge waves used to roll in off the Dana Point headlands. Today, the waves bounce harmlessly off the jetty at the entrance to the Dana Point Harbor.

Dana Point Harbor Activities

The harbor area and nearby Doheny State Park offer a range of popular outdoor activities, such as bicycling along the bike paths, sailing, kayaking, ocean fishing, and whale-watching trips. Dana Cove Park, also known as Baby Beach or Mother’s Beach, is a designated area for swimming that is protected and located next to the Ocean Institute. There is a no-wake zone for young children in your group. A spacious lawn area with a few shaded picnic tables is also available. During the summer, a lifeguard is on duty, and there is also a free parking area.

Dana Point Headlands Sea Caves

When the tide is low, you can hike along the rocky beach and see two sea caves. Go to the beach area west of the Ocean Institute and climb down the stairway to get there. Then, walk towards the north for approximately half a mile until you reach the caves. One of the caves is called Pirate’s Cave, although it’s unlikely that a pirate ever used it. It’s important to remember that you should only visit these caves during low tide.

Doheny State Beach Camping

Doheny State Beach Campground is ideal for camping near the beach. It is located just a few steps from the Harbor and is popular among overnight visitors. Some of the campsites at Doheny are situated right on the beach, providing a unique experience. However, it’s important to note that only 16 RV campsites are available, and there’s a separate group tent site at the campground’s far end.

Dana Point Headlands Nature Preserve

Consider taking a hike along the top of Dana Point Headlands to experience some of the best ocean views of the Southern California coast. You might even glimpse some whales from the headlands trail during the whale-watching season. Admission and parking are free, so you won’t have to worry about extra costs. Dana Strand Beach

Dana Strand Beach is located just north of the Dana Point Headland. It is one of the few beaches in Orange County that offer a free parking lot. A trail runs along the top of the bluff, providing stunning ocean views and a glimpse of the multi-million dollar homes in the community just above the beach. There are two ways to access the beach: a steep trail at the south end or a long stairway at the north end of the beach. Additionally, there is a trail that goes through the gated community and leads to the beach, but it has limited hours of operation.

Salt Creek Beach Dana Point

Salt Creek Beach is situated just north of Strand Beach in South Orange County. It has been a popular surfing spot since Dana Point Harbor was built. Today, besides surfers, Salt Creek attracts guests from two five-star resorts: the Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis. A bike trail runs inland from the beach under the Pacific Coast Highway. Cycling to Cooks Corner in Trabuco Canyon on paved bike trails with minimal street crossings is possible from Salt Creek Beach. I know because I have made this ride.

The Dana Point Whale Festival is one of Southern California’s most significant whale celebrations. People from all over the region gather to celebrate the annual migration of gray whales from Alaska to Mexico.
