Donner Memorial State Park is 6,200 feet in the Sierra Nevada, just outside Truckee, California. The park was established to preserve and tell the story of the unfortunate end of the Donner Party Camp during the winters of 1846-47. The party was trapped in the clutches of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range by inclement weather, resulting in a dark chapter of early pioneer life in California. Donner Memorial State Park serves as a reminder of this tragic event and the importance of preparedness in the face of the harsh realities of nature.
Donner Party Stranded
In 1846, a group of settlers known as the Donner Party left Illinois and started their journey westward toward California. Unfortunately, they reached the Sierra Mountains too late in the season to cross safely. The group was stranded near Donner Lake without the necessary supplies to complete their journey or any shelter to protect them from the harsh weather. To make things worse, rumors suggest that some of the surviving members of the group had to resort to cannibalism to survive.
Visiting Donner Memorial State Park
Since 1928, thousands of curious visitors have reportedly visited the over 3,000-acre park, also a designated National Historic Landmark, each year. The park offers approximately two and a half miles of hiking trails, allowing visitors to explore the rugged terrain covered in thick Jeffrey pine and white oak.
The lake is a hub of significant recreation, featuring boating and trout fishing, but it also provides a mellow place for a relaxing stroll or shady picnic. Although the park has many features, it is best known for two. The first is the Emigrant Trail Museum, the other being the Pioneer Monument, located on the east side of the lake, in and outside the park’s visitor center.
Emigrant Trail Museum
The museum depicts the cultural history of the Donner Memorial area with exhibits that include things about the local Native American tribes, the builders of the First Transcontinental Railroad, and, of course, the Donner Party themselves. The museum also offers an informative narrative of the natural history of Sierra Nevada.
Near the visitor center, a trail leads about 200 yards out to the Donner Party’s Murphy family cabin site and Pioneer Monument, with its 22-foot high base representing the snow’s height during that bleak winter of 1846.
The Lakeshore Interpretive Trail ends near a massive granite boulder that was once part of the wall and fireplace of the Murphy Cabin. A monument stands there, honoring the brave souls who undertook the difficult journey across the plains and mountains to reach California during the 1840s. This monument marks where the Donner Party families set up a shelter during their unexpected and ultimately catastrophic stay.
Where To Stay
Donner Memorial State Park Campground is situated on the beautiful shores of Donner Lake. It features 154 campsites and offers a variety of RV, trailer, and tent options. The campground is an excellent base for recreational opportunities in and around Donner Lake. It is typically open from late May through early October. There are also numerous hotels and motels nearby in Truckee and Lake Tahoe.
Getting There
Donner Memorial State Park is south of Interstate 80 and west of Truckee. Follow Donner Pass Road two miles from downtown Truckee to a stop sign. Turn left and follow the signs into the park. Truckee is 33 miles west of Reno and 13 miles from Lake Tahoe. The park is open year-round. Summer temperatures range from about 75 degrees during the day to the low 40s at night, and winter temperatures can drop as low as 20 degrees. For more information, visit the park website.
