Indian Canyons History

Centuries ago, the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians settled in Palm Springs. They cultivated melons, squash, beans, and corn and used native plants for basket weaving, seeds, and medicines. Palm Canyon: A Breathtaking Desert Oasis

The trail is horse-friendly, so consider that as an option instead of the traditional hike. Andreas Canyon: Impressive Rock Formations

The Andreas Canyon is a diverse area with various colors, from desert landscapes to fan palm trees. Within the half-mile radius, there are over 150 plant species, ensuring you will see something new each time you visit. The scenic trail winds down through a path lined with palm trees, passing by thousands of-year-old rock formations. As you approach the creek, you will encounter remnants of the indigenous people who once inhabited the area. Andreas Canyon trail is an easy hiking with a stream and various bird life. Murray Canyon: Endangered Bighorn Sheep

Indian Canyon is a popular spot for photographers and bird watchers. Along the way are picnic tables where you can stop and enjoy the lunch you brought. The Murray Canyon area is just south of Andreas Canyon, is less visited, and gives a truly secluded feel. Many wild animals roam high above the canyon. Bighorn sheep have been spotted here, and the endangered miniature bells bird nests along the rocky ridges.

Ranger-Led Hikes Through the Canyons

Ranger-led hikes are available if you prefer guidance in your exploration. The guide will take you through a mile-long trail lasting approximately 1.5 hours. You must register ahead of time at the Canyon Trading post. If available, visitors can go on a walk with a medicine man who tells terrific tales and spellbinding stories of Indian legend.

Indian Canyon is open from 8 am to 5 pm from October through July, and in the summer months, from July to September, the trails are only open on weekends.
