The town of Santa Ynez, founded in 1882, is about 40 miles north of Santa Barbara, California. It was once a bustling center of commerce with saloons, blacksmith shops, and stores. Although the Southern Pacific Railroad bypassed Santa Ynez, it remains an urban center for the region, with plenty of exciting places to explore.
Maverick Saloon
Mavericks Saloon, located on Sagunto Street in Santa Ynez, has served drinks and food since the early 1960s. The saloon is named after the TV series, Maverick, starring James Garner. The ceiling and walls are covered in dollar bills, but the beer is cold, and the food is good. The adjacent barn, formerly “Lulu Belle’s Restaurant,” is now used for events and live entertainment. 3687 Sagunto St. Suite D, Santa Ynez, California. Website.
Santa Ynez Museum & Carriage House
This excellent little Museum displays a collection of artifacts from its cowboy origins, such as wagons, stagecoaches, saddlery, apparel, and horse gear. It’s a hidden gem of Western Americana and highly recommended if you’re in the area. It is located at 3596 Sagunto St. in Santa Ynez, California.
Santa Ynez Chumash Museum & Cultural Center
This new facility is being built adjacent (the north side of Highway 246) to the Chumash Casino and Resort. “The Santa Ynez Chumash Museum and Cultural Center is being built to celebrate Chumash heritage, share the tribe’s history, and educate visitors about the rich culture of the area’s first people.” Opening fall of 2023. Website.
